Join a dynamic, collaborative in-house legal team! American Enterprise Group, through its family of companies, offers specialty life and health insurance products for seniors. With a headquarters in downtown Des Moines, the organization accommodates hybrid work arrangements. This role will oversee much of the organization’s contracting, along with general corporate matters. Experience in contract review and negotiation, including technology contracts, is strongly preferred.
JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Counsel is responsible for protecting the company against potential legal risks by providing basic to moderate legal advice and services to management and business units.

Prepare routine to moderately complex legal opinions, advice, and support, with some supervision, for management and business units by managing, assessing, and communicating legal reviews.
Manage deadlines and projects when providing legal and regulatory authority and risk assessment on the organization’s business operations, as well as upon recently enacted regulatory or legislative changes.
Manage routine to moderately complex projects such as the review, interpretation, and summary of laws and regulations, the communication of compliance/legal opinions, the facilitation of discussions with appropriate business units, and the calculation of risks for business processes, assisting in the analysis of higher-level legal issues as necessary.
Structure, draft, negotiate, and approve legal contracts, letters of agreement, policies, and other documents.
Manage external attorney services as applicable by monitoring and approving the work of outside counsel.
Provide an initial review of possible trademarks, coordinate trademark searches, file appropriate documentation such as contracts and agreements, handle follow-ups, and coordinate with outside counsel as needed.
Review and update policies, procedures, and disclosures as needed for adherence with applicable laws.
May assist in representing organization in litigation, arbitration, mediation, or other disputes with courts, government agencies, or other legal authorities.
Train, mentor, support, and develop team members by providing advice, coaching and educational opportunities.
Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
