The Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa is seeking a full time Program Director. This position will have strategic and program development and direction of ARL programs in relation to execution of its mission. Working closely with the CEO, the program director will have and continue to develop a deep knowledge of field and core programs and operations of the shelter. The perfect candidate would have a law degree and/or strong and proven supervisory and/or human resources background.
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Ensure ongoing success and growth of ARL programs in the areas of Therapets, Humane Education, Community Outreach, Animal Welfare Intervention and Volunteers and others to be developed or determined by CEO/program director. This position will have responsibility for the day to day supervision of the programs and lead and oversee program coordinators of these programs. Oversee legal contracts and agreements of the organization; Ensure effectiveness of programs; Work with outside HR company on benefits, personnel policies, other. Work with CEO and legislative personnel on legislative efforts in animal welfare. Other duties as assigned by the CEO.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Law degree preferred; masters or bachelor's degree, 3 to 5 years of experience in the workplace; or advance degree preferred with at least 2 years of management experience
Proven past success working with CEO or other high-level manager or leader
Persuasive and passionate communication skills
Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission driven and self-directed
Experience in animal welfare or non-profit experience preferred.
SKILLS or RELATED KNOWLEDGE:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, be computer literate, have the ability to balance multiple projects, be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, have excellent interpersonal skills, have enthusiasm and the ability to be a team player and work with a variety of people, have the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with others, have proven organization and planning skills, have ability to meet deadlines, be able to effectively and positively work with volunteers, must process maturity, good judgment, professional manner; must have strong and proven leadership and management skills; must be a self-starter, facilitator and innovator of new approaches to programs relating to furthering the ARL mission, must have a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record and be able to provide proof of vehicle insurance, must have affection for animals, concern for their welfare and a willingness to accommodate shelter animals in the workplace, must be comfortable and skilled working with a culturally diverse staff and community, must have a commitment to treat people and animals with respect; contribute to effective teamwork; promote intro- and inter- department cooperation; and foster public relations beneficial to the ARL.
