As an employee of the Judicial Branch for the State Of Iowa, the Staff Attorney I is a shared position and supports requirements for both the Attorney Discipline Board (ADB) and the Judicial Branch Education and Training Departments.
This is a shared position, with time devoted 20% to the Attorney Disciplinary Board (ADB), and 80% to the Judicial Branch Office of Education and Training. Responsible to the Assistant Director of Attorney Discipline or her designee with respect to ADB duties. Responsible to the Judicial Branch Director of Education and Training with respect to education duties.
Assists the Assistant Director of Attorney Discipline with administration, coordination and oversight of trusteeships implemented due to disability, death, discipline or disappearance of an attorney. May also assist with administration of other duties, such as deferral or probation monitoring, as directed.
Assists the Director of Education and Training with administration of the Judicial Branch education and training programs. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Identifying and coordinating the collection of materials produced by judges, attorneys, or associations that have value for informing the practice of judges in Iowa;
Coordinating the collection and dissemination of legal and ethical materials to judicial officers;
Tracking developments in case law, ethics decisions, and legislative mandates, and updating materials as necessary;
Coordinating with law schools to improve the educational opportunities and materials available to judicial officers;
Coordinating groups of judges and other subject matter experts in the preparation of materials that assist judicial officers in their daily practice;
Coordinating with other Judicial Branch groups (e.g., Children's Justice, the Clerk Manual Committee, the Judicial Branch Information Technology Steering Committee) to ensure consistency and alignment of practices throughout the organization;
Conducting legal research, editing written materials, and presenting CLE instruction as necessary;
Coordinating with the Director of Human Resources to develop and implement management training for both judicial officers throughout the branch;
Performing special projects that improve the quality, effectiveness and availability of educational materials for judicial officers.

Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in the State of Iowa with a law license in good standing and no significant history of discipline.
Prior experience as a practicing lawyer in the State of Iowa, including experience in the private practice of law with operation of a trust account, is preferred but not required.
Must be able to simultaneously handle multiple areas of responsibility with minimum supervision, properly prioritizing tasks and duties as dictated by changing demands.
Must possess strong verbal and written communications skills, with the ability and willingness to provide quality customer service in a fast paced, deadline driven work environment.
Prior experience creating materials for continuing legal education presentations and delivering educational programming, is preferred but not required.
Experience analyzing complex legal issues and recommending best practices to other lawyers, is preferred but not required.
Must be bondable; must possess high levels of personal and professional honesty and integrity, emotional maturity and stability, and genuine interest in improving the legal profession and the administration of justice.
