The University of Iowa, a research-intensive public institution of higher education located in Iowa City, Iowa, is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy Counsel in the University’s Office of General Counsel. The Deputy Counsel reports to the Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Provide legal advice to the University on a potentially broad variety of subject matter areas, including employment law, disability, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation issues in education and employment, litigation preparation and support, and other issues related to a public institution of higher education.
Experience - Required:
A Juris Doctor or equivalent degree in Law from an accredited law school
Current license to practice law in the State of Iowa or licensed in another jurisdiction with the expectation of becoming licensed in Iowa within one year
Considerable (5 years minimum) experience in a university, government agency, or sophisticated law firm setting working with complex legal issues
Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment
Clear and concise written and verbal communication (professional writing sample will be requested as part of the hiring process at a later date)
Excellent analytical and reasoning skills
Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize among multiple projects and initiatives involving diverse constituencies, both internal and external to the University of Iowa
Flexibility and willingness to learn new areas of law
Professional ethics and integrity
Experience in the following areas – Desired:
Employment law, disability law, litigation and administrative law
Management side human resources counseling
Title IX issues
Policy and procedure drafting and review
Preparation of training materials and comfort presenting materials to small or large groups with varying levels of knowledge of the subject matter
Contract review involving purchasing and software licenses
Academic misconduct issues
Free speech and academic freedom issues
